Here on TCR, high positions come with not only in-character responsibility, but out-of-character responsibility too. They are expected to become active members of the staff, and help work behind the scenes to keep the site running smoothly.
Most often, a potential staff member will be approached by one of the current staff, not the other way around. If you're a consistently active, friendly member of the site and you're knowledgable on the site's rules and customs, it's very likely you'll be considered should there be an opening in the staff. Keep in mind that if you are approached to become a staff member, you have no obligation to accept if you don't want to.
Sometimes, there may be applications open for staff positions, although this is rare. This is usually the case when a current staff member steps down or leaves the site and their character is left as a high ranking cat. In this situation, the high ranking cat will be placed up for adoption and applications will open for that character.
This is because cats are tied to their positions once they have them, and unless they are stepping down/retiring due to in-character reasons they will generally not be demoted back to warrior status.
There are two basic rules when it comes to playing high ranking cats:
- A single player may have no more than two high ranked cats: one leader or deputy, and one medicine cat or medicine cat apprentice. This rule can be overridden if a staff member has stepped down or left the site and needs someone to play their character(s) until someone new can take their place.
- A single player may not have more than one high ranked cat in the same Clan. This can be overridden for the same reason as above.
Lastly, in-character opinions of a character also count when they're being considered for a high ranking cat. As the Clans are being formed, it's unlikely that the cats will elect a cranky, selfish cat as their leader as opposed to one that wants the best for the Clan above all else. Neither of these characters is necessarily better than the other (variety is key!), one just obviously has more leader-like qualities.
The same goes for when current leaders are picking deputies. They will almost always choose a senior warrior, and it must be a cat they have faith in to lead the Clan.
So in summary, build good in-character ties if you want your cat to have a chance at a high ranking position!
Hopefully this explanation makes sense, and if anything needs clearing up feel free to send a message my way!
