In TCR's adoption system, there are two main options: adopt a character made by someone else, or disown one of your already approved characters for another member to potentially adopt. However, some people might not want others to play the characters they've created even if they don't have the time for all of them anymore. For these situations, there is a third option to turn a character of your own into an NPC.
NPC stands for "Non-Player Character" and means that, although the character is still in the game and acknowledged by Player Characters, they're not played by any one member. NPCs can be controlled casually by anyone in the background of a thread, such as having them make a comment or doing a small action, but they cannot be the main focus of the post. They're essentially side characters that can help move the story along.
If you decide to make one of your characters into an NPC, you will no longer be required to keep that character active or age them up at the start of each moon. They will still technically be your character, although you will not be able to post with them in a thread aside from the usual background appearances. They will continue to age and eventually die, as adoptable cats do, however you will still have control over how that happens.
Once you turn one of your approved characters into an NPC, it cannot be undone. It is a permanent choice for a character, so make sure you won't want to continue playing them later. In addition, if the number of cats in the Unowned Characters board exceeds one page, those that have been there the longest will be turned into NPCs at the start of each moon. If you've lost any characters to confiscations and haven't re-adopted them, make sure to do so before they're turned into NPCs if you still want to play them.
If you would like to make one of your characters into an NPC, just start a thread with the name of the character and your reasoning for doing so. A staff member will check it over as soon as possible and if everything seems good they'll move the character to the NPC board.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask of course!
